Tomintoul
At 345 metres above sea level, the Scottish village of Tomintoul is the highest settlement in the Highlands – the distillery of the same name near Ballindalloch lies just a few kilometres away, sitting equally high and remote between forest and water, though it falls just short of Braeval or Dalwhinnie for the title of highest Highland distillery. Tomintoul itself is one of Speyside's younger distilleries.
Tomintoul stands for a mild, malty-sweet, and often creamy, full-bodied house style – often described as "dessert in a glass". Alongside it, the distillery produces a heavily peated counterpoint under the name Old Ballantruan. How was Tomintoul founded in 1964 – and who owns the distillery today?
Tomintoul is one of Speyside's younger distilleries: in 1964, the two Glasgow whisky trading houses W. & S. Strong and Hay & MacLeod founded it as equal partners. As early as 1973, the Scottish and Universal Investment Trust acquired the distillery and doubled its capacity from two to four stills; the first bottling followed in 1974, timed to the distillery's tenth anniversary. In 1989, Tomintoul passed to Whyte & Mackay as part of a takeover by Brent Walker, and in 1990 the US group American Brands acquired the company. Since 2000, Tomintoul has belonged to the independent bottler Angus Dundee Distillers.
Why does Tomintoul taste so mild – and what is the story behind Old Ballantruan?
Tomintoul is known as "The Gentle Dram": its house style is deliberately unpeated, soft, and approachable. As a deliberate contrast, the distillery produces a heavily peated parallel line under the name Old Ballantruan, at around 55 ppm – an unusual case of a single distillery maintaining two such opposing styles.
