Westward
In 2004, brewmaster Christian Krogstad founded House Spirits Distillery in Corvallis, Oregon, which relocated to nearby Portland just a year later. Rather than processing finished malt as is typical, Westward Whiskey takes an unusual detour: first, an artisanal American pale ale is brewed from regionally grown barley, which is then double-distilled in custom-built, low-reflux copper stills - a brewer's perspective rather than classic whisky craftsmanship. Westward debuted in 2012 in a highly limited run, before the brand grew under CEO Thomas Mooney in 2015 to become the largest independent producer of American single malt.
