Tamdhu
With its own railway station and state-of-the-art kilns, the Speyside distillery Tamdhu was considered one of Scotland's most technically advanced in 1897. After a chequered history with several closures, Tamdhu has belonged to Ian Macleod Distillers since 2011, who consistently favour sherry cask maturation.
Tamdhu stands for a soft, fragrant malt whose character is shaped almost entirely by sherry cask maturation – with notes of toffee, almonds, and ripe fruit. From the Tamdhu 12 Year Old to the more mature 18 Year Old, you will find the right bottle for every occasion in our selection.

Why was Tamdhu considered the distillery of the future in 1897?
The purpose-founded Tamdhu Distillery Company built the distillery in 1897 with newly designed, heat-saving kilns, its own waste separation, and its own railway station for efficient logistics – setting standards in an era of technological progress. Just two years later, the Highland Distillers took over the site. Tamdhu stood idle for 20 years from 1927 to 1947 before production resumed; in 1976, an 8 year old became its first own single malt bottling. In 2010, the distillery was mothballed again, before independent bottler Ian Macleod Distillers bought it in 2011 and restarted production in 2012.
Why does Tamdhu rely almost exclusively on sherry casks?
Under Ian Macleod Distillers, the distillery's five historic warehouses were reactivated to store the single malt on site once again. At the same time, the new ownership committed firmly to sherry cask maturation for its standard bottlings – a cask policy many other distilleries have since moved away from due to high costs, but which became central to Tamdhu's brand identity.
Overview of the most popular bottlings
1. Tamdhu 12 Year Old
The entry point into the sherry-driven house style.
Taste: Sherry and cinnamon with a hint of mint.
Serving suggestion: A good introduction for fans of sherry-forward Speyside malts.
2. Tamdhu 15 Year Old
Further matured, with greater depth.
Taste: Toffee, almonds, and ripe fruit.
Serving suggestion: For anyone wanting the house style in more concentrated form.
3. Tamdhu 18 Year Old
The oldest core bottling to date.
Taste: Dense sherry depth with spice and dried fruit.
Serving suggestion: For special occasions.
