Warenghem

In 1900, the Warenghem family founded what began as a herbal liqueur business in Lannion, Brittany – best known for its "Elixir d'Armorique". It wasn't until 1983 that distillery manager Gilles Leizour began experimenting with whisky, and in 1987 "WB" appeared as Brittany's first ever blended whisky. The real breakthrough came in 1998 with the first French single malt: Armorik, named after the old Celtic name for Brittany. The distillery has sold its whiskies under this brand name, not "Warenghem", ever since – and played a leading role in establishing the protected "Whisky Breton" (IGP) designation in 2015.

Why is the distillery called Warenghem but the whisky Armorik?

Warenghem is the name of the family company and the distillery itself, producing in Lannion since 1900. The whiskies, however, are marketed under the separate brand "Armorik" – named after the Celtic word for Brittany. Anyone searching for "Warenghem whisky" will therefore find the products listed under the Armorik name.

What is "Whisky Breton"?

In 2015, Warenghem joined forces with other Breton distilleries to establish an official protected geographical indication (IGP) for whisky made in Brittany – a first for France, formally safeguarding the quality and origin of Breton whisky.

Flavour profile

Taste: Depending on the bottling, the range spans from maritime and mineral with a subtle smokiness to fruity, spicy sherry cask expressions; the Breton sea air is noticeable in many releases.

Recommended enjoyment: Neat at room temperature, to let the fine maritime and smoky nuances from Atlantic-coast maturation unfold.

Currently available are the peaty, smoky Armorik Yeun Elez Jobic Peated and the triple-cask matured Armorik Yeun Elez 2016/2025 - 8 Year Old Triple Cask.
