Drambuie

After his crushing defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746, Bonnie Prince Charlie fled to the Isle of Skye, where the MacKinnon family sheltered him, likely saving his life. Out of gratitude, the Prince is said to have left behind his personal liqueur recipe of whisky, heather honey and secret herbs - the origin of Drambuie, whose name derives from the Gaelic "an dram buidheach" ("the drink that satisfies"). Passed down through generations, the recipe eventually reached hotelier James Ross on Skye, who commercialised it in the 1870s. After his early death, his widow sold the recipe to wine merchant Malcolm MacKinnon - coincidentally also named MacKinnon, but a completely different, unrelated family - who began commercial production in Edinburgh in 1910 and founded the Drambuie Liqueur Company in 1914.

Are the founders of the Drambuie company the same MacKinnons from the Skye story?

No - a common mix-up. The original recipe stayed with the descendants of the MacKinnons who sheltered the Prince in 1746 for almost 150 years, but was then passed on to hotelier James Ross. Only his widow sold the recipe around 1909/1910 to a different, unrelated family also named MacKinnon, who built today's Drambuie Liqueur Company from it.

What makes the recipe so special?

The exact blend of herbs and spices remains one of the best-kept secrets in the spirits world - only a handful of people know it in full, currently including master blender Brian Kinsman of William Grant & Sons.

Flavour profile

Taste: Sweet and spiced with dominant notes of heather honey, anise and herbs, underpinned by a round whisky base.

Recommended enjoyment: Neat over ice, or as the base for the classic Rusty Nail (with Scotch whisky) or a Drambuie Sour.
