Portrait: What makes the Tomintoul 30 year old 1st-fill Oloroso Sherry Butt #6 Signatory Symington’s Choice special
Imagine: A whisky so old that it can already vote, drive a car, and complaining about back pain - voilà, the Tomintoul 30 Year Old from the First-Fill Oloroso Sherry Butt #6, bottled by delicate hands in the Symington's Choice series. A liquid time capsule that even older oak trees would envy.
The Tomintoul distillery - named after the highest village in the Scottish Highlands - is known for its smooth, mild character. No coincidence, because Master Distiller Robert Fleming has watched over their stills for five decades as if they were his own children. The man is practically Tomintoul's whisky godfather and has shaped the distillery's style like a 50-year-old record player: classic, charming, no-nonsense.
Now Andrew Symington comes into play – whisky sleuth, cask whisperer, founder of Signatory Vintage. For his Symington's Choice series, he scours Scotland's warehouses for the liquid crown jewels – and lo and behold: Butt #6 from 1995 immediately won his heart. And after 30 years of maturation in an Oloroso sherry cask, it's a wonder the cask itself hasn't received a doctorate.
The result? A dram that boasts character, history, and a decent amount of maturity – and remains surprisingly affordable. So, if you think good whisky has to break the bank, you haven't encountered this old Tomintoul yet. Or, as they say in Scotland: “That's just whisky – that's wisdom in a glass.”

Tasting Notes: This is how the Tomintoul 30 year old 1st-fill Oloroso Sherry Butt #6 Signatory Symington’s Choice tastes like
- Nose: a true fragrance firework display! Ripe dried fruits such as raisins, figs, and dates provide the opening, accompanied by fine wood and old leather - behind them, aromas of nut brittle, orange peel, and a hint of beeswax unfold - subtle hints of tobacco and antique furniture polish round off the complex, profound profile - a scent like a leather-bound library with a fireplace
- Palate: full-bodied, oily, and impressively harmonious - dark chocolate meets roasted nuts, with caramel, cinnamon, and a hint of nutmeg - the decades of barrel aging are evident in the fine wood spice, which never dominates, but dances elegantly with sweeter tones - a subtle influence of espresso and dark fruit provides depth - a palate experience with grandeur
- Finish: long, warming, and multi-layered - spicy oak remains present, accompanied by delicate smoky notes, leather, and a dry sweetness - later, Hints of cocoa, raisin bread and a hint of sherry essence that lingers on the palate
