El Brujo
In western Panama rises Cerro Brujo - the "witch's hill" - in whose highest cave, according to legend, magic potions were once brewed and voodoo rituals held. It's exactly this mystical lore, still reflected today in the bottle shape and gift packaging, that gives El Brujo its name. Behind the brand lies a fusion of French expertise and Panamanian rum tradition: freshly pressed cane juice from the dry season (December to April) is distilled, blended and matured for eight years in ex-bourbon barrels, before a six-month finish in ex-Pedro Ximénez sherry casks gives the rum its characteristic Spanish style. What's the story behind the "witch's hill"?
Cerro Brujo in western Panama is said, according to legend, to be a place where magic potions were brewed in a cave - this mystical story inspired El Brujo's name, bottle shape and packaging.
Why is a Panamanian rum finished in sherry casks?
El Brujo combines French blending expertise with Panamanian tradition: after eight years of maturation in ex-bourbon barrels, the rum receives a six-month finish in ex-Pedro Ximénez sherry casks - a technique fitting Panama's more Spanish-influenced rum style.
Flavour profile
Taste: Soft and full-bodied with caramel and ripe fruit from the bourbon cask maturation, complemented by a fine, sweet sherry note from the PX finish.
Recommended enjoyment: Neat or on the rocks as a digestif.
