Where does the unusual name Writers Tears come from?
The name alludes to Ireland's great writers of the past, said to have loved the full-bodied, creamy blend of pot still and malt whiskeys so much that, as legend has it, their tears tasted of this very whiskey. Bernard and Rosemary Walsh founded Walsh Whiskey in 1999 as a family business with the stated aim of helping restore Irish whiskey to international acclaim.
How did Writers Tears get its own distillery?
In 2006, Walsh Whiskey signed a supply agreement with Irish Distillers, which led to The Irishman brand in 2007 and, finally, Writers Tears in 2009. In 2014, construction began on the company's own distillery at Royal Oak, which opened at Easter 2016 as a joint venture with the Italian group Illva Saronno. When the two partners parted ways in 2019, the Walsh family retained the brand rights to Writers Tears and The Irishman, while Illva Saronno kept the distillery itself.
