Rhum from Martinique
In 1994, Martinique's rum producers applied for something that had never existed before for any spirit outside France: an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC), modelled on French wine law. The motivation was concern over their own reputation, as rum from other countries was increasingly being sold under the name "Rhum de Martinique". On 5 November 1996, the AOC was finally granted - since then, rhum agricole from Martinique must meet strict requirements, from the sugar cane variety to the distillation method to maturation, in order to carry the name. The crucial difference from classic rum: rhum agricole is not distilled from molasses but directly from freshly pressed sugar cane juice, giving it a noticeably fresher, grassy, floral aroma. Since March 2024, the designation even carries the even more prestigious name "Appellation d'Origine Protégée" (AOP), previously reserved exclusively for French wines.

Why is the AOC designation for rum so unusual?
Before Martinique, this protected status didn't exist for any spirit outside France - the island's rum producers deliberately applied France's strict wine law to their industry in 1994 to protect themselves against inferior imitations.
What distinguishes rhum agricole from classic rum?
Classic rum is usually made from molasses, a byproduct of sugar production - rhum agricole, by contrast, is distilled directly from freshly pressed sugar cane juice, producing a noticeably fresher, floral aroma.
