In 1924, a wooden two-masted schooner carrying an enormous cargo of rum was seized off the coast of New York - the Kirk & Sweeney, one of the most notorious smuggling schooners of the Prohibition era, which had regularly run rum from the Caribbean to the American Northeast. The California-based spirits company 35 Maple Street pays tribute to this piece of smuggling history with its rum brand of the same name, distilled in partnership with the Bermúdez distillery in Santiago de los Caballeros - a family-run operation since 1857 and one of the largest, most storied rum distilleries in the Dominican Republic.
