Danish Whisky
A doctor, a chef, a butcher, a teacher, a helicopter pilot and four engineers - nine Danish friends with no distilling experience whatsoever founded Stauning Distillery in May 2005 inside a slaughterhouse owned by the group's butcher, single-handedly creating the category of Danish whisky in the process. Barley was sourced from a local farmer, malted by hand in the slaughterhouse's cold store, ground in the meat mincer and distilled in two small wood-fired pot stills - a makeshift solution that became the brand's signature. In 2015, Diageo took a minority stake, and by 2018, after roughly €50 million of investment, Stauning was able to open Denmark's first purpose-built whisky distillery.

How did nine amateurs end up founding a distillery?
The nine founders were pure whisky enthusiasts with no professional background - their unconventional solutions (meat mincer instead of a grain mill, cold store instead of a malting floor) became the brand's core identity rather than a limitation.
What makes Stauning's whisky distinctive in flavour?
As one of the few European producers, Stauning makes Danish rye whisky from local rye alongside its single malt - a direct result of its deliberately short, regional supply chains.
