Strathmill
In 1891, the Strathmill distillery emerged from a converted grain mill on the banks of the River Isla in Keith. For over a century, however, the malt produced here disappeared entirely into the blended whiskies of its various owners – above all the world-famous J&B Rare.
It was only in 1993 that a Strathmill single malt became available for the first time, bottled by the retail chain Oddbins. Another eight years passed before the first genuine distillery bottling appeared in 2001: the 12-year-old from the official "Flora & Fauna" range. How did a grain mill become a whisky distillery?
In 1891, a former grain mill on the banks of the River Isla in Keith was converted into a distillery; it initially traded under the name "Glenisla-Glenlivet", following the era's fashion of adding "Glenlivet" to Speyside distillery names to suggest quality. In 1895, the gin company W. & A. Gilbey acquired the site for £9,500 and renamed it Strathmill. For almost a century, little changed in the business model: the entire malt produced went into blends, above all J&B Rare, which Gilbey had helped found. In 1968, the number of stills was increased from two to four, and purifiers were installed on the spirit stills.
Why did it take so long for the first official bottling?
It was only in 1993 – over 100 years after founding – that the very first Strathmill single malt reached the market, bottled by the British retail chain Oddbins. The first genuine distillery-owned bottling, however, took another eight years to appear: in 2001, the 12-year-old Strathmill was released as part of Diageo's official "Flora & Fauna" range, Diageo having owned the distillery since the 1997 merger of Grand Metropolitan and Guinness.
