Ship's cats have accompanied seafarers since antiquity - keeping rats at bay and considered good-luck charms by superstitious sailors. Kirsch Import and Oldman Spirits pay a tongue-in-cheek tribute to this nearly forgotten maritime tradition with Captain Cane: a rum blend made from 90% five-year-old molasses rum from the West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados and 10% tropically aged rum from the Worthy Park Estate in Jamaica, both finished in ex-bourbon barrels. One euro from every bottle sold also goes to Katzenhilfe Bremen (a cat rescue charity) - up to a total of 5,000 euros. Pirate romance with a clear conscience.

What do ship's cats have to do with rum?

Cats were fixtures aboard sailing ships for centuries, kept to control rats and vermin. Captain Cane playfully revives this nearly forgotten tradition while also donating one euro per bottle sold to Katzenhilfe Bremen, a cat rescue charity.

What rums make up the blend?

The base is two Caribbean molasses rums: 90% five-year-old rum from the West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados and 10% tropically aged rum from the Worthy Park Estate in Jamaica, both finished in ex-bourbon barrels - distilled in both pot still and column still.

Flavour profile

Taste: Dessert-like sweetness with vanilla and toffee, contrasted by peppery spice and exotic fruitiness - with around 60g of sugar per litre, an approachable, playful rum.

Recommended enjoyment: Neat over ice, or as the base for sweet tiki cocktails.
