Green Spot

In 1805, the Mitchell brothers founded their Dublin wine merchant house Mitchell & Son - and in the process developed an unusual practice that would go on to name an entire whiskey family: they marked their whiskey casks of different ages with dabs of coloured paint. This gave rise to Blue Spot, Yellow Spot and Red Spot alongside Green Spot - originally sourced from the Jameson distillery and matured in a mix of dark Oloroso and light Fino sherry casks. Of the four Spot whiskeys, Green Spot became by far the most popular and was, for generations, sold almost exclusively through Mitchell & Son's own Dublin shop. One special variant today even links the brand to French wine aristocracy: Green Spot Château Léoville Barton is additionally matured in casks from the eponymous Bordeaux grand cru estate, run by the descendants of Irish "Wine Geese" emigrant Thomas Barton.
