Finnish Whisky
The idea for one of Finland's best-known whisky brands was born, of all places, in a sauna: a group of friends sat together drinking rye whisky and wondered why nobody in Finland actually produced rye whisky themselves - and so the Kyrö Distillery Company was founded in 2014 in an old dairy building in Isokyrö, western Finland, which has since produced rye whisky from 100% Finnish wholegrain rye. Twelve years earlier, in 2002, the family company Teerenpeli - founded in 1994 and originally a restaurant and brewery business from Lahti - had already begun distilling whisky and today operates Finland's largest malt whisky distillery. Despite vodka's dominance, strict alcohol advertising bans and high taxes, both brands have made a name for themselves internationally.

How did Kyrö come to be founded?
The origin is literally found in a sauna - a group of Finnish friends were drinking rye whisky there and realised Finland had no rye whisky production of its own. In 2014, they went on to found the Kyrö Distillery Company.
