Ledaig
In 1798, John Sinclair founded a distillery on the Isle of Mull that traded for many decades exclusively under the Gaelic name Ledaig - "safe haven" - before the now more familiar name Tobermory took over. It wasn't until 2007 that then-owner Burn Stewart revived the historic name specifically to distinguish the distillery's heavily peated side from its mild, unpeated Tobermory line: since then, Ledaig has denoted the smoky, peaty 10-year-old single malt, while Tobermory itself continues to denote the smoke-free variant - two completely different whisky characters from one and the same distillery, the island's only one.

Why does one distillery carry two different brand names?
Tobermory was originally known by the name Ledaig - in 2007, Burn Stewart deliberately used this historic dual identity to clearly separate the peated bottling (Ledaig) from the unpeated Tobermory line.
What does the name "Ledaig" mean?
The Gaelic word means "safe haven" - a reference to the distillery's sheltered position on Tobermory Bay on the Isle of Mull.
