Brugal
Catalan-born Don Andrés Brugal Montaner brought his rum-making expertise from Cuba to the Dominican Republic in 1888, founding his first distillery in the port city of Puerto Plata. As early as 1919, Brugal set a decisive standard with its clear, lightly distilled "Ligero y limpio" – becoming the first Dominican producer to move away from the heavier, blended aguardiente style common at the time.
Today, the fifth generation of the Brugal family leads the company, which holds around 80 percent of the Dominican rum market. From Brugal Extra Viejo to 1888, you will find the right bottle for every occasion in our selection.

How did a Catalan come to distil rum in the Dominican Republic?
Don Andrés Brugal Montaner was born in Sitges, Catalonia, and first acquired his rum-making expertise after emigrating to Cuba. In 1888, he finally settled in Puerto Plata on the north coast of the Dominican Republic and founded his first distillery there. In 1919, he achieved an important innovation with "Ligero y limpio" ("light and clean"): he was the first producer in the country to offer pure, lightly distilled rum rather than blending it with the heavier, cheaper aguardiente common at the time. After maturing this rum for a year, Brugal launched its first gold rum in 1920.
Where does the distinctive net packaging come from?
A member of the founding family once visited India and noticed that premium food products there were often presented in net bags to emphasise their exclusivity. This observation inspired the net wrapping still characteristic of Brugal's best-known bottles today.
