Glenglassaugh
Few distilleries in Scotland have a history as turbulent as Glenglassaugh in the coastal town of Portsoy: founded in 1874, mothballed repeatedly, and with its distilling licence officially surrendered in 1992, the distillery's story seemed truly over. All the more surprising, then, was its 2008 reopening by the Dutch Scaent Group.
Since 2013, Glenglassaugh has belonged to the BenRiach Distillery Company, which had already successfully revived BenRiach and GlenDronach. With the Glenglassaugh 12 Year Old, you will find the current core bottling of this unique comeback story in our selection.

How did the distillery come to close for good – and why wasn't it final after all?
Founded in 1874 by James Moir, production began in 1875 on the site of the old Craigmills Farm. After Moir's death in 1887, his nephew Alexander Morrison took over the distillery and equipped it with new stills. The following decades were marked by numerous closures, until the distillery was mothballed for good in November 1986. In 1992, the owners even surrendered the distilling licence – a step only taken when there is no intention of ever producing again. All the more remarkable, then, that the Dutch Scaent Group bought the distillery for £5 million in 2008 and ceremonially reopened it on 24 November 2008.
Who owns Glenglassaugh today?
Since March 2013, Glenglassaugh has belonged to the BenRiach Distillery Company, which has itself been part of the American Brown-Forman group since 2016. Glenglassaugh also features in well-known blends such as Cutty Sark and The Famous Grouse.
What's actually in the glass?
Glenglassaugh's malts show floral freshness, fruitiness, grainy notes, a delicate maritime salinity, and pleasant sweetness. Despite its proximity to the Speyside region, the distillery is officially classified among the Highland malts.
