Teaninich
Mountaineering was no popular pastime in 1817, yet Captain Hugh Munro devoted his life to exactly that passion – he climbed nearly every peak in Scotland and was the first to systematically catalogue all mountains over 3,000 feet, which still bear his name today: "Munros". That same year, on his own estate near Alness in the northern Highlands, he founded the Teaninich Distillery with similar boldness, at a time when legal distilling in the region was anything but a given. After several changes of tenant and passing to the Distillers Company Limited in 1934, a second, state-of-the-art still house with six stills doubled capacity from 1972 onward. Despite its considerable size, Teaninich remains one of the lesser-known names among Highland malts – unfairly so, as a first sip quickly reveals.Code: PFINGSTEN26

Who was Captain Hugh Munro?
Teaninich's founder wasn't just a distillery owner but also a passionate mountaineer. He was the first to catalogue every Scottish mountain over 3,000 feet - a list still called "Munros" after him today, and a lasting institution among hillwalkers in Scotland.
Why is Teaninich so little known despite its size?
With a capacity of around 4 million litres a year, Teaninich ranks among the larger Highland distilleries, yet the vast majority of its output goes into blends. Official single malt bottlings are correspondingly rare, making it something of an insider's tip among connoisseurs.
Flavour profile
Taste: Round and soft with a delicate smoky note, noticeable spice and a slightly oily texture - more robust than the average Speyside, but without Islay's peat power.
Recommended enjoyment: Neat at room temperature, ideal for those wanting to discover a spicier, lesser-known Highland malt.
The 10-year-old Flora & Fauna bottling shows the distillery's character in its purest form: Teaninich 10 Year Old Flora & Fauna.
