Rye Whiskey
Rye may in fact be older than bourbon - the earliest European settlers in Pennsylvania and Maryland already distilled their own whiskey from locally grown rye, and over the decades two competing styles emerged: the spicy, sharp "Monongahela rye" from Pennsylvania, with up to 95% rye content, and the milder, sweeter Maryland style with around two-thirds rye. Prohibition in 1920 hit this tradition especially hard: numerous historic distilleries in Pennsylvania and Maryland closed forever, while Kentucky recovered quickly after Repeal in 1933 and went on to dominate the bourbon market - rye was long considered nearly extinct. It took the craft spirits movement and large producers like MGP Ingredients in Indiana, whose rye distillate still forms the base of numerous well-known brands today, to bring the rye whiskey tradition back.

Why did rye whiskey nearly disappear?
Prohibition in 1920 forced hundreds of distilleries in Pennsylvania and Maryland to close. After Repeal in 1933, Kentucky in particular invested in rebuilding its bourbon industry - Pennsylvania and Maryland, by contrast, lost their rye tradition almost entirely.
What does MGP Ingredients have to do with modern rye?
The large Indiana-based distiller supplies its rye distillate (usually a 95/5 rye and malted barley blend) to numerous well-known brands and laid an important foundation for the rye renaissance of recent years.
Facts and figures
Likely the oldest American whiskey style, rooted in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Prohibition 1920-1933 nearly wiped out the tradition. MGP Ingredients (Indiana) a key modern rye supplier. Also produced outside the US, e.g. in Denmark (Stauning) and Germany (Stork Club). One recommended representative is Rittenhouse Straight Rye.
