Black Tot
At exactly 11am, on six bells of the forenoon watch, a 300-year-old tradition of the British Royal Navy ended on 31 July 1970: the daily rum ration, a fixture of shipboard life since 1655 and issued since 1866 as 71.3 millilitres at 54.6% ABV - a day that went down in history as "Black Tot Day". But the last stocks of this historic navy rum didn't vanish: sealed in antique stone flagons, they were tapped only for state occasions and royal weddings for over four decades, before finally being bottled as "Black Tot - Last Consignment" - true to the original at almost exactly 54.3% ABV, the Navy's historic issuing strength.

Is Black Tot rum really the historic navy drink?
It depends on the bottling: "Black Tot - Last Consignment" genuinely comes from the last original Royal Navy stocks, sealed since 1970. The regular Black Tot bottlings, such as the classic Blender's Reserve, are modern tribute blends that recreate the historic navy style without coming from the actual original casks.
What happened on "Black Tot Day"?
On 31 July 1970, at 11am, the last official rum ration was issued aboard British warships - the end of a tradition over 300 years old, dating back to 1655.
Flavour profile
Taste: Bold and complex with dark molasses, tropical fruit and a spiced depth, typical of the traditional navy blend style from several Caribbean rums.
Recommended enjoyment: Neat or with a drop of water, also ideal for a classic Navy grog.
