Bain's

In 1886, the sons of Captain James Sedgwick bought land on the Berg River near Wellington, founding what remains, to this day, the only commercial whisky distillery on the entire African continent. Since 2009, this James Sedgwick Distillery has also been home to Bain's Cape Mountain Whisky - South Africa's very first single grain whisky. The brand was named after Andrew Geddes Bain, a road engineer who built the legendary Bainskloof Pass through the mountains near the distillery in 1853, creating one of the Cape region's most important transport links. Bain's is traditionally distilled from 100% corn and benefits from South Africa's warm climate, which allows for considerably faster maturation than in cool Scotland.
