Swiss Whisky
In 1999, the European Union finally lifted a decades-old ban on grain distilling - for Karl Locher, fifth-generation master brewer of the Appenzell brewery Locher, established since 1886, this was the starting signal for an unusual experiment: whisky matured not in classic sherry or bourbon casks, but in beer casks up to 120 years old from the brewery's own history. This gave rise to Säntis Malt, whose "Dreifaltigkeit" bottling earned it the title "European Whisky of the Year" from Jim Murray in 2010. Considerably more broadly positioned today is Langatun in the canton of Aargau, which produces an extensive range from cask finishes to its own rye whiskey using Swiss barley and alpine spring water.

Why does Säntis Malt mature in old beer casks?
The Locher brewery has been brewing in Appenzell since 1886 - master brewer Karl Locher used the existing beer casks, some over a hundred years old, to give his whisky a unique flavour profile shaped by decades of beer maturation.
What sets Langatun apart by comparison?
Langatun focuses on a broad portfolio of different cask finishes - from sherry to Chardonnay to red wine - and additionally produces its own Swiss rye whiskey.
