Rebel Yell

In the late 1940s, former Louisville mayor Charles R. Farnsley devised a new bourbon for the renowned Stitzel-Weller distillery to mark the Weller family's 100th anniversary: Rebel Yell, distilled to a recipe unusual for bourbon, with a high wheat content instead of the customary rye. When United Distillers closed Stitzel-Weller in 1992, production moved to the new Bernheim distillery, before the brand and distillery went separate ways in 1999: the brand went to the David Sherman Corporation (now Luxco), while Bernheim passed to Heaven Hill - where Rebel Yell is still distilled and bottled under contract to this day.

Rebel Yell uses predominantly wheat as its secondary grain alongside corn, instead of the rye typical of bourbon - the same recipe tradition that shaped the legendary Stitzel-Weller distillery the brand originated from.

Since 1999, the brand has been owned by Luxco, but it is distilled and bottled under contract by Heaven Hill at the Bernheim distillery in Louisville - an example of the complex ownership chains within the American bourbon industry.

Taste: Soft and round with caramel, vanilla and a gentle wheat sweetness, without the typical rye bite of other bourbons.
