Frysk Hynder

In 1999, Frisian organic brewer Aart van der Linde completed an internship at a Scottish whisky distillery - an experience that inspired him to add an unusual second passion to his Us Heit brewery, established in 1984 in Bolsward, Friesland. From 2002 he distilled his own single malt from a hop-free beer mash, and the first bottles appeared in 2005 under the name Frysk Hynder - named after the Friesian horse, the region's proud breed, which still adorns every bottle's cork today. In small batches of around 14,000 bottles a year, the whisky matures for at least three years in used wine, port, cognac or sherry casks and is bottled by hand, unfiltered.

Why does the bottle feature a horse motif on the cork?

Frysk Hynder means "Frisian horse" - a tribute to the famous horse breed from the distillery's home region, chosen as its name by founder Aart van der Linde.

How did a beer brewer end up making whisky?

An internship at a Scottish distillery in 1999 sparked van der Linde's interest - since 2002 he has distilled his own single malt from the hop-free mash of his own Us Heit brewery.
