Glenrothes ranks among the most storied distilleries in Speyside. Production began on 28 December 1879 – the very day the Tay Bridge at Dundee collapsed. Despite several severe fires and an explosion in its history, Glenrothes remains one of the region's great names and a key component of the blends Cutty Sark and Famous Grouse.

Why did Glenrothes' story begin on a day of disaster?
Founded in 1878 by William Grant, Robert Dick, and John Cruickshank, Glenrothes was the second distillery in the small town of Rothes, in the heart of Speyside, after Glen Grant. Production began on 28 December 1879 – on the very day the famous Tay Bridge at Dundee collapsed. The distillery has not always had it easy since: in 1897 a fire damaged large parts of the site, in 1903 an explosion caused significant damage, and in 1922 a huge fire destroyed Warehouse No. 1 along with over 2,500 casks – burning whisky poured into the Burn of Rothes at the time.
Who owns Glenrothes today?
In 1887, Glenrothes merged with the Islay Distillery Co. (owner of Bunnahabhain) to form Highland Distillers Ltd, which later became part of the Edrington Group. In 2010, Edrington sold the brand rights to the wine merchant Berry Bros & Rudd, but bought them back in 2017 – since then, distillery and brand have again both belonged to Edrington.

Glenrothes matures comparatively quickly, showing remarkable complexity even in younger vintages. Predominant maturation in first-fill oloroso sherry casks shapes a rather dry yet distinctly fruity and spicy character with only a little smoke.
