Dumbarton

In 1959, owner Hiram Walker acquired six geese to protect the sprawling grounds of the Dumbarton distillery from intruders – the famous "Scotch Watch". By 2001, the guard flock had grown to around a hundred birds and reliably kept out human troublemakers. The geese, however, could not save the distillery, founded in 1938, from its own structural decline.

With annual production once reaching around 100 million litres, Dumbarton was at times Scotland's largest distillery, primarily supplying the Ballantine's blends. In 2002, the never fundamentally renovated site was mothballed, and it was demolished in 2005. The rare remaining bottlings of this "grain giant" are now sought-after collector's items.

Why did a distillery need a flock of geese as security?

In 1938, Hiram Walker & Sons built the Dumbarton distillery on the site of the former McMillan shipyard to supply grain whisky for the successful Ballantine's blends. From 1938 to 1991, Dumbarton even shared the site with the malt distillery Inverleven. At its peak, the plant produced around 100 million litres a year, making it at times the largest distillery in all of Scotland. In 1959, six geese were acquired as an unusual form of "site security" – by 2001, the flock, known as the "Scotch Watch", had grown to around a hundred birds and proved reliably effective against human intruders.

Why did such a large distillery have to close?

In 2002, the structural condition of the never fundamentally renovated plant proved untenable. Rather than invest in an extensive refurbishment, owner Allied Distillers shifted production to the expanded Strathclyde distillery. Dumbarton was mothballed in 2002, and its distinctive buildings – including the red tower long visible from afar – were demolished in 2005 to make way for a residential area. The remaining seven geese of the Scotch Watch lived on the site for another ten years before being relocated to an existing flock at Glasgow Green in 2012.
