In 2000, American John Glaser, previously marketing director at Johnnie Walker, founded a company from the kitchen of his West London home with a simple but revolutionary idea: blended whisky should no longer be seen as inferior to single malts. With Hedonism, the world's first commercial blended grain whisky, Compass Box proved from the very start that blends require just as much creative craftsmanship as individual malts, if not more.
In 2022, the investment firm Caelum Capital acquired a majority stake; John Glaser stepped back from day-to-day operations in May 2024, though he remains connected to the brand as a shareholder. From Peat Monster to Orchard House, you will find the right bottle for every occasion in our selection.

Why is Compass Box not an ordinary blend producer?
John Glaser, an American originally hoping to become a winemaker, gained years of Scotch-blending experience at Johnnie Walker before founding his own company in 2000 – quite literally from his own kitchen. His declared aim: to break blended whisky's dusty image. Rather than large, anonymous volumes, Glaser focused on small, carefully composed batches from hand-selected casks across different distilleries – known at Compass Box as "small batches".
What has changed in recent years?
Glaser never shied away from challenging conventions – such as the practice of withholding age statements or a whisky's exact composition. This openness, together with creative bottle design, made Compass Box one of Scotland's most acclaimed whisky blenders. In 2022, investment firm Caelum Capital took a majority stake and brought in experienced spirits executive Maurice Doyle as CEO. In May 2024, founder John Glaser finally stepped back from his operational role, though he remains connected to the company as a shareholder.
