St George's Distillery

For over 600 years, the Nelstrop family grew and processed grain in Norfolk, before farmer James Nelstrop and his son Andrew took a radical step in 2006: England's first officially registered whisky distillery in more than a hundred years. The copper stills, built by the traditional Scottish firm Forsyths, began operating in November 2006, supervised in their first months by none other than Iain Henderson, the former master distiller of the legendary Laphroaig distillery on Islay. Prince Charles officially opened the site in March 2007, and the first mature bottling reached the market in 2009 - the start of the modern English whisky renaissance.

What role did a Laphroaig master distiller play?

Iain Henderson, shortly before his retirement as Laphroaig's master distiller, supervised the first four months of production at St George's and trained former brewer David Fitt, who then took over management - a direct link between Scottish tradition and England's fresh start.
