Kaniché
In 2017, the French Cognac and spirits house Maison Ferrand - known for its Plantation, or Planteray, rums - acquired its first distillery outside France: the storied West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados, founded back in 1893 by George Stade. Maison Ferrand had already been sourcing rum here for its own bottlings since the early 2000s; with the purchase of the distillery came a distinct new line: Kaniché, a Barbados rum combining the house's traditional double-cask maturation with the island's unmistakably smooth character.

What connects Kaniché to Plantation/Planteray?
Both brands come from the same house, Maison Ferrand, and are produced at the West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados. While Plantation/Planteray undergoes a second maturation in France, Kaniché is a distinct line focused on pure Barbadian character.
Why did a French Cognac house buy a Caribbean rum distillery?
Maison Ferrand had sourced rum from the West Indies Rum Distillery since the early 2000s. In 2017, the company decided to acquire its first distillery outside France to secure long-term quality and continuity of production.
