Bristol
John Barrett, who had previously built up the Bristol Brandy Company and sold it to the cognac house Hine (LVMH), founded Bristol Spirits Ltd. in 1993, specialising in maturing casks in damp, cool British cellars – to this day one of Britain's oldest independent rum bottlers.
Bristol Classic Rum does not represent its own distillery, but rather carefully selected rum casks from now-closed or transformed Caribbean distilleries – including Caroni from Trinidad, Long Pond from Jamaica, and Port Morant and Enmore from Guyana.
How did a cognac merchant become a rum specialist?
John Barrett first founded the Bristol Brandy Company, which he later sold to the cognac house Hine – at the time part of the luxury group LVMH. In 1993, he founded a new company, Bristol Spirits Ltd., specialising in maturing spirit casks in Bristol's damp, cool cellars – a climate that brings cognac, Armagnac, Scotch whisky, and rum alike to full maturity over the years.
Why do so many Bristol labels read like a history lesson?
Bristol Classic Rum's reputation rests on cask stocks laid down early from distilleries that have long since closed or fundamentally changed their production – including Caroni from Trinidad, Long Pond from Jamaica, Port Morant and Enmore from Guyana, and Rockley Still rums from Barbados. As one of the earliest independent British bottlers, Bristol still deliberately sets itself apart from the pure whisky bottlers that dominated the market in the 1980s and 1990s.
