Tyrconnell

In 1876, a chestnut colt named Tyrconnell, owned by Andrew Alexander Watt, won Ireland's National Produce Stakes at astonishing odds of 100 to 1 - lending his name to the whiskey brand of the Watt distillery, which had been producing in Derry since 1762. For nearly fifty years, The Tyrconnell was among the best-selling Irish whiskeys in the USA, before the distillery closed for good in 1925 and the brand faded into obscurity. Only in 1988 did the newly founded Cooley distillery acquire the naming rights, and in 1993 The Tyrconnell returned as a double-distilled single malt - a style rare in Ireland that remains the revived brand's hallmark to this day.
