Suntory
Founded as early as 1899, company founder Shinjiro Torii built Japan's first commercial whisky distillery, Yamazaki, in 1923 – with future Nikka founder Masataka Taketsuru serving as its first distillery manager. Few other Japanese beverage groups have shaped the history of Japanese whisky as much as Suntory.
Suntory stands for the great breadth of Japanese whisky: from the world-famous Yamazaki single malt to the elegant Hibiki blend to the light Chita single grain. From the Yamazaki 12 Year Old to Hibiki Japanese Harmony, you will find the right bottle for every occasion in our selection.

How did one founder bring whisky to Japan?
Shinjiro Torii opened a shop selling imported wines in Osaka in 1899, laying the foundation for Suntory – today one of Japan's oldest beverage groups. In 1923, he realised his vision of a genuine Japanese whisky by building the Yamazaki Distillery, Japan's first commercial whisky distillery. As distillery manager, he brought in Masataka Taketsuru, who had previously learned the craft in Scotland. Their paths later diverged: Taketsuru founded his own company, Nikka, still Suntory's biggest rival on the Japanese whisky market today.
How did Japanese whisky conquer the world?
The breakthrough came in 2015, when a Yamazaki Sherry Cask was named the best single malt in the world in Jim Murray's Whisky Bible – ahead of the great Scottish names. Demand for Japanese whisky exploded worldwide as a result. A year earlier, in 2014, Suntory had already acquired the US group Jim Beam and merged to form Beam Suntory – one of the largest spirits companies in the world.
