Portrait: What makes the Old Ballantruan 10 year old special.
In the tranquil Scottish region of Speyside, where the sheep count more than the inhabitants and whisky is almost a way of life, people like to paint - single malt... And one in particular stands out from the ranks of these well-behaved Highland students: Old Ballantruan 10 year old.
Produced at the Tomintoul Distillery, which modestly calls itself "The Gentle Dram," this whisky leads a bit of a double life. While the distillery is otherwise known for its smooth, mild whiskies, Ballantruan thought, "I'll smoke a cigarette." Peat, that is. Strong.
The name "Old Ballantruan" comes from a nearby, long-standing water source - probably so mysterious that even Google Maps isn't entirely sure. Experiments were carried out there as early as the 1970s, but the first smoky drop wasn't officially bottled until 2005. The 10-year-old followed as a finely aged version in 2014.
What makes it special? Well, it's one of the few peated whiskies from Speyside - so basically, the guy in a kilt who listens to AC/DC while everyone else plays the bagpipes.
And so it stands: 10 years old, slightly rebellious, full of Scottish charm - Old Ballantruan is less a drink, more a Highland attitude. Only in a bottle. And yes, he'd probably look damn good with a hat, too.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Old Ballantruan 10 year old tastes like
- Nose: An immediately present, dry peat smoke rises - earthy and slightly medicinal, but with a pleasant sweetness in the background - aromas of vanilla, barley malt and a hint of roasted nuts complement the smoky base - some heather and a touch of campfire round off the complex aroma
- Palate: Powerful and balanced - the smoke remains dominant, but is wonderfully complemented by sweet caramel, honey and a malty warmth - in the middle, light wood notes, some pepper and subtle spices appear - a trace of dark chocolate and dried fruits provide depth and complexity
- Finish: Long, warm and smoky - the peat remains clearly present, but never overpowering - spicy and slightly sweet nuances reappear in the finish - a dry, almost mineral aftertaste lingers on the palate
