Ailsa Bay

In 2007, William Grant & Sons built a new malt distillery on the grounds of its own Girvan grain distillery - on the very site where the legendary, long-since-demolished Ladyburn distillery had stood for decades. The name Ailsa Bay refers to Ailsa Craig, the striking granite rock that rises from the sea roughly 16 kilometres off the coast in the Firth of Clyde and is visible from the distillery. The new distillery was built to meet growing demand for malt whisky, both for the Grant's blends and for the two flagship single malts Glenfiddich and Balvenie; the official opening in 2009 was even attended in person by Prince Charles.

Why was Ailsa Bay built on the exact site of Ladyburn?

After the short-lived Ladyburn distillery (1966-1975) was demolished, the site within the huge Girvan complex sat unused - an obvious location for William Grant & Sons' new malt distillery.

Who officially opened the distillery?

Prince Charles personally conducted the official opening in 2009 - a high-profile appearance underscoring the new distillery's importance to the group.
