Millstone

What began as a 300-square-metre genever distillery, founded by Fred van Zuidam in 1976 in Baarle-Nassau, grew within a few decades into one of Europe's most exciting craft distilleries. The decisive step came from son Patrick, who began experimenting with whisky purely out of passion in 1996 - aiming to create the very first Dutch single malt. After more than ten years of maturation, the first Millstone bottling reached the market in 2007. The name refers to the millstones of traditional Dutch windmills, used to grind the grain for the whisky - a tribute to a country better known for genever than for single malt.

Is Millstone really the first Dutch single malt?

Yes - Patrick van Zuidam began his first experiments in 1996, and after years of maturation, the first official Millstone bottling reached the market in 2007 as the very first Dutch single malt whisky.

Where does the name Millstone come from?

It refers to the millstones of classic Dutch windmills, used to grind the grain for the whisky - a deliberate nod to its Dutch origin in a market traditionally dominated by Scottish and Irish names.

Flavour profile

Taste: Depending on the cask, the range spans from nutty and malty (American Oak) to bold and spiced with sherry sweetness (Oloroso) to peaty and fruity (Peated PX). The rye bottling delivers classic rye spice.

Recommended enjoyment: Neat at room temperature, to discover the unusually complex aromatics for a Dutch terroir.
