The reason lies in a naming dispute with the Distillers Company Limited from the early 1990s.

Why does Macduff carry two different names?
The Macduff Distillery was founded by Glen Deveron Distillers Ltd. – a consortium of Brodie Hepburn, Marty Dykes, and George Crawford. 1962 is usually cited as the founding year, though some sources name 1960 or even 1958 as when construction began. Until the early 1990s, the whisky was simply called Macduff. Then the Distillers Company Limited (DCL) asserted rights to that name, after which the distillery began marketing its official bottlings as Glen Deveron – named after the river on which it stands. Independent bottlers such as Signatory or Gordon & MacPhail, however, are still permitted to use the name Macduff.
How did Macduff end up with Bacardi?
In 1972, William Lawson took over the distillery, then part of the Martini & Rossi group. In 1990, a fifth still was added to the existing four – the unusual configuration of two wash stills and three spirit stills is otherwise found only at Talisker. In 1992, Bacardi acquired both Martini and the Macduff distillery; today it belongs to Bacardi's subsidiary John Dewar & Sons. Most of the whisky produced here still goes into the successful William Lawson's blend. A notable technical first: Macduff was the first distillery to use a metal mash tun.
