Rum from NIcaragua
In 1875, the then 25-year-old Alfredo Francisco Pellas Canessa emigrated from Genoa to Nicaragua to run his father's shipping business - he stayed in the country and built a fleet of 23 steamboats on Lake Nicaragua, connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific. Only when construction of the Panama Canal and the expansion of the railway made his business obsolete did Pellas sell his ships and, together with four other businessmen, found Nicaragua Sugar Estates Limited in 1890 at the foot of the San Cristóbal volcano in Chichigalpa. The actual brand name Flor de Caña wasn't created until 1937, yet the family company has produced rum on this single estate ever since - across five generations.

How did a shipping entrepreneur become a rum producer?
Alfredo Pellas originally came to Nicaragua as a shipping merchant - only when the Panama Canal and the railway made his steamboat fleet obsolete did he turn to sugar cane and later rum production in 1890.
Why doesn't the rum carry the name Flor de Caña from the start?
The company was initially called Nicaragua Sugar Estates Limited - the now world-famous brand name Flor de Caña wasn't introduced until 1937, almost 50 years after the company's founding.
