Torabhaig
Operator Mossburn Distillers began in 2014 to lovingly convert a roughly 200-year-old farm building in Teangue into a distillery; a team made up almost entirely of island locals carried out the first distillations in 2017. That makes Torabhaig only the second licensed whisky distillery on the Isle of Skye – and the first new one since Talisker in 1830.
Torabhaig stands for boldly peated island malt under the motto "Well-Tempered Peat". The first bottling, the "Legacy Series 2017", was delayed by the pandemic and only released in February 2021. How did a 200-year-old farm become Skye's second distillery?
In 2014, Mossburn Distillers began converting a historic farm building in Teangue, in the south of the Isle of Skye, into the Torabhaig distillery – only the island's second licensed distillery, and its first new one since Talisker in 1830. A team made up almost entirely of local residents carried out the first distillations in 2017. Since whisky must mature for at least three years, the first release was further delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic: it was only in February 2021 that the distillery's very first bottling, the "Legacy Series 2017", appeared.
What does "Well-Tempered Peat" mean?
Torabhaig has specialised in a boldly peated yet balanced island style – hence the motto "Well-Tempered Peat". The distillery belongs to Mossburn Distillers, which, alongside Torabhaig, also operates the grain-whisky-focused Reivers distillery in the Scottish Borders.
