Few brands embody the rise, fall, and rebirth of the Irish whiskey industry as vividly as Tullamore D.E.W. The original Old Tullamore Distillery was founded in 1829, passed through several generations, and finally closed in 1954. The initials D.E.W. refer to Daniel E. Williams, who shaped the distillery as its manager from the 1870s onward.
After decades of production having moved away from the town, whiskey-making returned to Tullamore in 2014 with a new distillery built by William Grant & Sons – the first greenfield Irish distillery in over 100 years. Where do the initials D.E.W. come from?
In 1829, Michael Molloy founded the Old Tullamore Distillery on the site of an even older distillery. His nephew Bernard Daly inherited it in the 1840s and, in the 1870s or early 1880s, brought in Daniel E. Williams as manager. Williams' initials eventually gave the brand the name it still carries today: Tullamore D.E.W. – often playfully read as "Tullamore Dew".
How did the brand survive the closure of the original distillery?
Following prolonged financial difficulties, the Old Tullamore Distillery closed for good in 1954. The brand rights were sold to Power's in 1965, and shortly afterwards the brand became part of the Irish Distillers Group. C&C acquired the rights in 1993, before William Grant & Sons bought the brand for £171 million in 2010. On 17 September 2014, William Grant & Sons opened an entirely new distillery on the outskirts of Tullamore – the first greenfield Irish distillery in over 100 years – bringing whiskey production back to the town after a 60-year break. Tullamore D.E.W. is today the second-largest Irish whiskey brand after Jameson.
