Hampden
Founded in 1753 by Scottish immigrants Stirling and Farquharson in the parish of Trelawny on Jamaica's north coast, Hampden remains one of the island's oldest rum distilleries and the reference point for its most intense, aromatic rum style.
Hampden stands for uncompromisingly traditional Jamaican rum: produced using the heavy pot still method, with some of the highest ester levels permitted under Jamaican law. From the Hampden Estate 8 Year Old to the Hampden 1753, you will find the right bottle for every occasion in our selection.

How is Jamaica's most intense rum style made?
Hampden Estate was founded in 1753 and initially produced mainly sugar, before its especially high-ester rum became its trademark. Distiller George McFarquhar Lawson is credited as the pioneer of the methods that still define Hampden today: in certain fermentations, "muck" (a pit of active bacterial cultures) and "dunder" (distillation residues from pits around the distillery) are deliberately reintroduced to intensify ester formation. This allows Hampden to reach ester levels of 35 up to 1,600 g/hL of pure alcohol – the upper limit permitted by the Jamaican government.
Since when has Hampden released its own bottlings?
In 2009, the Hussey family took over the distillery. It was only in 2018 that the first official bottlings under the Hampden Estate name itself appeared – before that, the distinctive rum flowed mainly to independent bottlers and into blends.
Overview of the most popular bottlings
1. Hampden Estate 8 Year Old
The distillery's matured core bottling.
Taste: Intensely fruity with tropical fruit and the sharp edge typical of high ester levels.
Serving suggestion: For fans of intense, funky Jamaican rums.
2. Hampden 1753
Named after the distillery's founding year.
Taste: Bold and aromatic with typical pot-still character.
Serving suggestion: A good introduction to the authentic Hampden style.
