Jura
More red deer (around 6,000) live on the remote Hebridean island of Jura than people (around 200) – it was here that George Orwell retreated to write his novel "1984". The whisky distillery of the same name can only be reached via the neighbouring island of Islay.
Jura stands for a style unusually mild for an island whisky, only lightly smoky, with round sweetness and fresh sea breeze. From the approachable Jura 12 Year Old to the more mature 18 Year Old, you will find the right bottle for every occasion in our selection.

How did the distillery survive 60 years of dormancy?
Distilling on Jura dates back to 1810, and in 1831 Archibald Campbell received the official licence for the "Small Isles Distillery" in Craighouse. The Pattison crash at the end of the 19th century, which shook the entire Scotch whisky market, hit this remote island distillery especially hard: production ceased in 1901 and the equipment was dismantled by Ferguson & Sons. It was only in 1963, after 60 years of dormancy, that Charles Mackinlay & Co. had the distillery completely rebuilt – with taller stills that still shape Jura's characteristic style today. After several changes of ownership, Jura now belongs to Whyte & Mackay, part of the United Spirits group.
Why does an island whisky from Jura taste so untypically mild?
Unlike its neighbours on Islay, Jura is not heavily peated; unlike Talisker, it is not as bold and peppery; and unlike Highland Park, it is not oily and heather-driven. The tall stills installed in 1963 produce a lighter, cleaner spirit – the result reminds some tasters more of a (northern) Highland malt than a classic island whisky.
Overview of the most popular bottlings
1. Jura 12 Year Old
The entry point into the mild house style.
Taste: Round sweetness, ripe fruit, and a fine, salty sea breeze.
Serving suggestion: Neat, as an uncomplicated introduction to island whisky.
2. Jura 18 Year Old
The distillery's mature core bottling.
Taste: Deepened fruit and spice notes with a soft, long finish.
Serving suggestion: For anyone wanting the house style in a more concentrated form.
