El Dorado
Along the Demerara River in Guyana, where 17th-century Dutch settlers used elaborate land reclamation methods to create mineral-rich soil for sugar cane cultivation, more than 300 independent sugar factories had emerged by the 19th century, each with its own distillery and rum marque. After the decline of the sugar industry and decades of political upheaval following independence in 1966, only a single operation remained: in 1983, the last two producers merged to form Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL), today the sole guardian of the protected designation "Demerara Rum". What makes this rum unique are its historic wooden stills, such as the Port Mourant, Versailles and Enmore stills - designs no longer operated anywhere else in the world.

Why is the rum called "El Dorado" when it comes from Guyana?
The name refers to the legendary city of gold that European explorers once believed lay somewhere in the Amazon region of South America - a symbol of wealth and legend that fits perfectly with Guyana's long, storied rum tradition.
What's special about the wooden stills?
The Port Mourant, Versailles and Enmore stills are historic wooden constructions that once belonged to Guyana's more than 300 independent sugar-factory distilleries. After the industry's consolidation, they survived only at DDL and remain uniquely operational in the world today.
Flavour profile
Taste: Full-bodied and darkly sweet with molasses, caramel, dried fruit and a characteristic, lightly smoky wood spice - typical of the bold Demerara style.
Recommended enjoyment: Neat or on the rocks for the aged bottlings, while younger editions also work well in classic rum cocktails.
Start with El Dorado 12 Year Old.
