Glendullan
Built in 1897 by the Aberdeen blender William Williams, Glendullan was the seventh and final distillery to be established in the legendary Speyside town of Dufftown on the River Fiddich. As early as 1902, it rose to become the preferred whisky of the British royal court under Edward VII – an early seal of approval for the young distillery.
Between 1970 and 1972, an entirely new, modern distillery was built right next to the historic plant; both produced in parallel until 1985, when the original plant was closed and dismantled. Why are there two different Glendullans?
The original Glendullan distillery was built in 1897 by William Williams and renamed Macdonald, Greenlees & Williams (Distillers) Ltd. in 1919. In 1926, the Distillers Company Limited (DCL) took over operations, passing it to its malt arm, Scottish Malt Distillers (SMD), in 1939, which mothballed the distillery from 1940 to 1947 due to the war. Between 1970 and 1972, a second, modern plant with six stills was built on the same site, using the efficient "Waterloo Street" system. Both distilleries – the old and the new – produced in parallel until 1985, when the original plant was finally closed and dismantled. Whisky from before that point therefore comes from a blend of both plants.
Why does the brand carry the "Singleton" name?
From 1902, Glendullan even supplied the British royal court under Edward VII – an endorsement that lastingly shaped the brand's reputation. Today, owner Diageo markets the distillery's single malt bottlings under the name "The Singleton of Glendullan", one of several "Singleton" brands within the group, each representing a different distillery.
