Dutch Whisky
In 1975, Fred van Zuidam founded the company Baarle International with just a single copper still in 300 square metres of space, in the border town of Baarle-Nassau - after twenty years of experience at De Kuyper in Schiedam. It wasn't until 1996 that the family distillery, by then known as Zuidam Distillers, produced its first experimental whisky casks, and only in 2007 did Millstone, its first own Dutch whisky brand, reach the market. Following a "farm to glass" principle, Zuidam grows much of its own barley and rye and has the grain traditionally ground in windmills - a signature trait that gave Millstone (referring to a mill's grinding stone) its name. Alongside this, the same distillery also sells its own blended whisky lines, such as Smugglers Trail, under the Zuidam family name.

Why is the best-known Dutch whisky brand called "Millstone"?
The name refers to the traditional windmill grinding of the grain that Zuidam Distillers still practises for its whiskies today - a deliberate contrast to industrial large-scale mills.
What's the difference between Millstone and Zuidam as brand names?
Both come from the same family distillery: Millstone denotes the single malt and rye whisky line, while blended whisky series such as Smugglers Trail are sold under the Zuidam name.
