Slyrs
During a study trip to Scotland in 1994, colleagues at the Lantenhammer fruit distillery are said to have made a wager over whether a single malt whisky could also be distilled in Upper Bavaria – five years later, master distiller Florian Stetter took up the challenge and founded one of Germany's best-known whiskies under the name Slyrs. The brand is named after the historic term for the region around a monastery founded in 779 by Lake Schliersee.
Slyrs stands for pure, alpine ingredients: barley malt and the clear spring water of the Bannwaldquelle at the foot of the Alps. From the approachable Slyrs Classic to the unusual Slyrs Rye, you will find the right bottle for every occasion in our selection.

How did Slyrs become one of Germany's best-known whiskies?
In 1994, Florian Stetter, master distiller and owner of the Lantenhammer fruit distillery, took a study trip to Scotland with colleagues – legend has it that this led to a wager over whether a single malt whisky could also be distilled in Upper Bavaria. In 1999, Stetter began his first attempts at the Lantenhammer distillery and named the new brand Slyrs, after the historic name for the region. The first 1,600 bottles went on sale in 2002 – sold out within three days. In 2004, brothers Florian and Anton Stetter founded the independent Slyrs KG, and in 2007 a new distillery in Neuhaus am Schliersee gave the brand its own dedicated production site.
What makes whisky from Lake Schliersee taste distinctive?
Slyrs uses exclusively barley malt and spring water from the Bannwaldquelle at the foot of the Bavarian Alps. Maturation in comparatively small casks, combined with the alpine climate's pronounced temperature swings between summer and winter, leads to faster maturation than in many Scottish warehouses – an effect also exploited by other non-Scottish distilleries in continental climates.
Overview of the most popular bottlings
1. Slyrs Classic
The core of the brand and the place to start.
Taste: Malty-sweet with vanilla and light fruit, warm wood notes.
Serving suggestion: Neat or with a drop of water as an introduction to German whisky.
2. Slyrs Rye
Unusual for a German whisky: a rye bottling rather than pure barley.
Taste: Spicy and peppery with rye's characteristic bite, plus caramel and vanilla.
Serving suggestion: For anyone wanting to venture beyond the barley-malt standard.
Facts and figures
Location: Neuhaus am Schliersee, Upper Bavaria. Water source: Bannwaldquelle. Parent company: Slyrs KG (formerly part of the Lantenhammer fruit distillery), founded in 2004 by Florian and Anton Stetter.
