Two from the drinks industry, two from drinks advertising, and one a brand ambassador: in 2011, five friends from Dublin gave up their jobs to distil whiskey together and founded the Glendalough brand.
Named after the picturesque "Valley of the Two Lakes" in County Wicklow, site of a famous 6th-century monastic settlement founded by St Kevin, Glendalough stands for modern Irish whiskey with unusual cask finishes. How did a shared dream become its own distillery?
In 2011, Barry Gallagher, Brian Fagan, Gary McLoughlin, Kevin Keenan, and Donal O'Gallachoir gave up their jobs to build a whiskey brand together. In 2013, today's Glendalough Distillery was built on the edge of Newtownmountkennedy, County Wicklow, equipped with a 500-litre Holstein still imported from Germany. The name comes from the nearby valley of Glendalough – Gaelic for "Valley of the Two Lakes" – site of a monastic settlement founded by St Kevin in the 6th century.
Where does the whiskey Glendalough sells today come from?
During its build-up phase, Glendalough sourced its whiskey from other distilleries, with the stated aim of eventually taking over the entire production process itself and bottling with water from the Wicklow Mountains. Alongside whiskey, the distillery also produces a range of seasonal gins made with hand-foraged botanicals reflecting each season.
