Finlaggan
Few whisky brands are surrounded by as much mystery as Finlaggan: named after Loch Finlaggan, the historic seat of the "Lords of the Isles" on Islay, the whisky has been bottled since 1992 by the Vintage Malt Whisky Company – founded by Brian Cook, a former director at Morrison Bowmore Distillers. To this day, the company keeps the identity of the Islay distillery behind the whisky strictly secret.
Suspected sources include Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Ardbeg, or Caol Ila – the company has only ever confirmed that it is always the same distillery of origin. The core range was relaunched in 2014; today, Finlaggan is sold in over 30 countries. From Finlaggan Original to Cask Strength, you will find the right bottle for every occasion in our selection.

Why does Finlaggan keep its origin a secret?
In 1992, Brian Cook, formerly a director at Morrison Bowmore Distillers, founded the Vintage Malt Whisky Company – Finlaggan was among the company's launch brands from the start. Rather than trading on the name of a well-known distillery, the company deliberately chose strict anonymity: to this day, it does not reveal which Islay distillery is actually behind the whisky – only confirming that it is always the same source. Connoisseurs have speculated for years that Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Ardbeg, or Caol Ila are the most likely candidates.
Where does the name Finlaggan come from?
The name refers to Loch Finlaggan, the historic seat of the "Lords of the Isles" – the medieval Gaelic rulers of the Hebrides – on Islay. In 2014, the Vintage Malt Whisky Company relaunched the core range; today, Finlaggan is sold in over 30 countries, offering classic Islay peat character at a considerably more accessible price than many well-known branded distilleries – with the added appeal of its anonymous origin.
