"Rome was built on seven hills, Dufftown stands on seven stills" goes a saying coined at the end of the 19th century – and indeed, this town of only around 1,500 residents was once home to no fewer than seven distilleries, earning it the unofficial title of "capital" of malt whisky.
Since 2006, the distillery's single malt has been marketed under the name "The Singleton of Dufftown" and stands for a balanced, medium-bodied Speyside style with pronounced fruit notes. How did a small town become the whisky capital?
In 1896, Peter Mackenzie, Richard Stackpole, John Symon, and Charles MacPherson built the Dufftown distillery as the town's sixth, converting an old grain mill. Production began on 10 November 1896, and as early as 1897 the distillery passed to P. Mackenzie & Co., who also owned Blair Athol in Pitlochry. In 1933, Arthur Bell & Sons bought the distillery for £56,000. Over the decades, further distilleries opened and closed in the town – including Mortlach, Glenfiddich, Balvenie, Convalmore, Glendullan, Parkmore, and later Kininvie and Pittyvaich – cementing Dufftown's reputation as the whisky capital to this day.
Why is the whisky now called "Singleton"?
In 1985, Dufftown passed to United Distillers & Vintners (today Diageo), in whose portfolio it remains the largest distillery. Since 2006, Diageo has marketed the single malt under the catchier name "The Singleton of Dufftown" – alongside sister malts from Glendullan and Glen Ord, also sold under the "Singleton" name.
