In 847 AD, the Viking Hrafna-Floki is said to have become the first settler to set foot on an island whose existence had previously been mere rumour - and to have given it the name it still carries today: Iceland. Almost 1,200 years later, in 2009, the family-run Eimverk distillery was founded with the explicit goal of making Icelandic spirits exclusively from local ingredients; production began in 2013. Floki whisky, named after that legendary Viking, uses an ingredient found in almost no other whisky in the world: dried sheep dung as smoking fuel. What at first sounds like a pure marketing gimmick is in fact plain Icelandic necessity - on this largely treeless, wind-battered island, there is barely any forest for smoking wood, while sheep vastly outnumber people, and their dung has served as fuel since the settlement era.

Why is Floki smoked with sheep dung?

Iceland's harsh climate and rugged winters leave it with almost no tree cover, so smoking wood is scarce. Icelanders have used sheep dung as an alternative fuel since the Viking era, including for smoking fish and lamb, and Eimverk was the first in the world to use it for whisky too.
